Julie Newman

Julie Newman is a Virginia girl through and through, from her roots on the East Coast of the Commonwealth, to her home in the Tri-Cities. She brings 25 years of television experience, and four Emmy awards to PBS Appalachia. She serves on the Governing Board for The National Academy of Television Arts and Science for the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter as a Regional Vice President. You may recognize her from the decade she spent as the main anchor of News 5 WCYB in Bristol, VA.

As Vice President and General Manager of PBS Appalachia, Julie is dedicated to creating a television station that celebrates the kind, talented, hard-working folk who call these mountains home. Our motto is 'Amplifying the Voice of Southwest Virginia', and that is our mission; to create content that reflects our people, our culture, and our heritage. We are more than the Appalachian stereotype perpetuated by mainstream media; we are a society of resourceful people who care about our land and our families. We are Southwest Virginia!

Julie grew up in Williamsburg, VA, went to college at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA and started her television career in Norfolk, VA at WVEC-TV, an ABC affiliate. When she fell in love, she moved to upstate New York so her husband, Geoff, could pursue his MBA in Entrepreneurship. She anchored at News Center 7 in Ithaca, NY and News 10 Now in Syracuse, NY until they started a family and came home to Virginia. While their children were young, she anchored at WSET-TV in Roanoke/Lynchburg and then took a more family-friendly position as Executive Producer at Blue Ridge PBS.

In 2012, the Newman family moved to the mountains of Bristol, VA and planted their roots.
